“To live is the rarest thing in the world. Most people exist, that is all.” – Oscar Wilde

Nebraska City, NE –This is a state that people tend to neglect pretty often, we’ve come to learn. And we don’t think that’s right. After all, when have you last heard of someone who goes vacationing in Nebraska? Right? We know! But, we disagree. And the reason for that is the fact that we were recently there and we decided to shine some light on a place we, your travel maniacs at HopAmerica.com, think should be swarming with visitors.

The Right Kind Of Stuff For The Right Kind Of Visitors

It’s called Nebraska City and it’s actually the county seat of Otoe County. Right off the bat, here’s a fun fact – Nebraska City has been credited as the oldest incorporated city in the state. Truth be told, Nebraska State Legislature was responsible for it, but not without reason. It was actually the first one approved by a special act of the Nebraska Territorial Legislature way back in 1855. And in our book, that’s one cool historical fact.

Nebraska City, NE, has a population of around 7,300, though you’ll find slightly different information scattered across various sources. However, even though some may say that this small town doesn’t have everything you might wish for as a visitor, they’ve got another thing coming. There’s a lot of stuff to see, do and experience in and around Nebraska City, and the best part about it is – all of them are uniquely exquisite.

Nebraska City Obliterates Prejudices About Small Towns

This gorgeous place is known far and wide as “The Home of Arbor Day.” This is because this town was the home of the first Secretary of Agriculture of the United States, Mr. J. Sterling Morton. His estate, Arbor Lodge, is open today as a museum. Mr. Sterling Morton was famous for promoting the planting of trees on the prairie for windbreaks, fruit and, most importantly, shade. In fact, the headquarters of the National Arbor Day Foundation is located near his home.

And now we come to our favorite part – recommendations. And when it comes to food, Nebraska City really has a ton of options for every palate, much more than one would expect from a small town. If we’re talking fast food, the Runza Restaurant is a great place to start, followed by Arby’s, Pilot Travel Centers, Valentino’s Grand Italian Buffet, as well as Casey’s General Store. The fine dining experience is the responsibility of establishments such as Parker’s Smokehouse, The Keeping Room Café, and the Whispering Pines B&B Restaurant. Bars include Bing’s Sports Bar, Little Ted’s, and the End Zone.

The Real Question Is – Why Would You Want To Be Anywhere Else?

Accommodation options are also where we like to give out a couple of tips. And believe us, you won’t make a mistake if you go with any of the following. Hotels and motels include the Lied Lodge & Conference Center, Super 8, Motel 6, the Deluxe Inn and the Best Western. Campgrounds are also ample here, if you’re looking to add a more adventurous note to your stay. Our recommendations include the Victorian Acres RV Park & Campground, the Riverview Marina State Recreation Area, or the Indian Cave State Park.

And lastly, the one thing that either makes or breaks any vacation is a good time. And if you’re on the hunt for that, there’s no beating Nebraska City’s famed festivals. One example is the Lemon Days (July 28th-30th), which many claim is the world’s biggest sidewalk sale. The AppleJack Festival (September 16th-18th) is also heaps of fun, and is the mother of all fruit-based festivities. It’s THE festival people think about when they hear “Nebraska City.” The AppleJack Extreme Bullriding (September 23rd-24th) is an adrenaline-packed event that often features a lot of bruises, sprains and an occasional concussion, in addition to some of the best bull riders in the country. And December 10th is reserved for the Yule Festival, which is the city’s way of kicking off the Holiday Shopping Season. And all that’s missing is – you!
